As Christmas day approaches

Oh come.

Oh come, Emmanuel.

And ransom captive Israel that mourns in lonely exile here.

Until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice!

Rejoice!

Emmanuel shall come to thee, Oh Israel.

Free thine own from Satan’s tyranny.

From depths of hell thy people save, give them victory over the grave!

Come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here.

Disperse the gloomy of night and death’s dark shadows put to flight!

Rejoice!

Rejoice!

Emmanuel shall come to thee, Oh Israel.

My favorite song this advent season. Advent is why I can enjoy and celebrate Christmas. If there was not a recognition of the captivity, the tyranny, the darkness, then I could not enjoy this holiday.

But advent does come before Christmas. The reality of waiting. Waiting in sorrow and darkness and night. Waiting for hope and light. Waiting for a Savior. A King. A mighty Warrior.

A baby? Didn’t see that one coming.
